Sergei Sadkov

Specialization: GIS Specialist
I am a GIS Specialist with over 10 years of experience in Environmental Monitoring and Remote Sensing Analysis. I gained my MSc in Geography at the Lomonosov Moscow State University. My specialization was in Landscape Ecology, I was mapping landscapes and wildfires in the Kerzhenskiy natural Reserve (Nizhegorodskii region, Russia) for my master's thesis. After graduation, I worked as a Junior Researcher at the Sergeev Institute of Environmental Geosciences (IEG) in Moscow, Russia. I was a part of a research team performing environmental monitoring using Remote Sensing Data, especially on lacustrine thermokarst and mining industry impact issues. For instance, we estimated thermokarst lake dynamics in the Arctic. In this research, I performed Remote Sensing Data Analysis and Geostatistics. Also, I got experience in 3D modeling from UAV imagery, LIDAR, and Ground Penetrating Radar data. From 2016 to 2018 I was part-time working at the Russian Geographical Society supervising a group of experts within its grant program. There I monitored over 100 projects per year, in different areas of Geography, providing non-stop connections with the researchers and science popularizers supported by the RGS. Also, I was supervising a project team to correct and modernize the Russian school textbooks on Geography, clearing them of outdated data and concepts. By the summer of 2018, over 1.3 million renewed tutorial issues were published. This job has improved my skills of communication with people in science and media, as well as in defending my position in front of the seniors. After 2018 I retired from the RGS and IEG to improve my English and programming skills to further boost my career. Next year I got a proposition of work from the JSS "TerraTech" which is a commercial subdivision of "Russian Space Systems". My job there included Data Engineering and preparing training sets for neural networks, 3D modeling, etc. In particular, I was making QGIS plugins and scripts on Python to automate data refinery, reprojection, and visualization. The resulting models are being used in construction, natural hazards, mining, agriculture, forestry monitoring, and the presentation of company products. Among the ones I've contributed, I can highlight "DigitalEarth" (deep learning research initiative), "ATLAS VR" (3D Earth digital twins for business and educational issues), and "Pixel AI" (commercial AI platform for remote monitoring, now on beta-testing). Now I am out of Russia and looking for any opportunities to continue my career in GIS.

Portfolio

Pixel AI

Further development of the “DigitalEarth” project aimed to deliver remote sensing analysis to business and society. Was on beta-testing till November 2022. For that project I’ve improved my code for creating deep learning training sets, and also for the remote sensing data visualization, to provide optimal space image looks and readability.

Atlas VR

Virtual reality platform using satellite imagery and thematic maps to create digital twins of landscapes and infrastructure for education, tourism, environmental, and business issues. In this project I was preparing data on space imagery, topography and thematic maps, like forestry of forest canopy height maps. Also I provided the source data reprojection to minimize errors between different map layers.

Digital Earth

The project on cloud software solutions for automated satellite data analysis using AI-technology. My responsibility was to prepare training sets for deep learning to get landcover contours from the remote sensing data. It included remote sensing data refinement and reprojection, correcting the manual interpretation results (geometry and attributes) and creating set of training data with hundreds of images.

Work experience

GIS Specialist
Digital Earth
.
Cloud software solutions for automated satellite data analysis using AI-technology and other solutions to make thematic maps and analytic reports. My responsibility was to prepare training sets for deep learning to get landcover contours from the remote sensing data. It included remote sensing data refinement, reprojection, correcting the manual interpretation results (geometry and attributes), and creating sets of training data with hundreds of images with corresponding raster masks where each data pixel is interpreted as forest, water, crop field, etc.
GIS Specialist
Atlas VR
.
Virtual reality platform using satellite imagery and thematic maps to create digital twins of landscapes and infrastructure. Used for visual assistance for education, tourism, environmental, and business issues. In this project, I was preparing data on space imagery, topography, and thematic maps, like forestry of forest canopy height maps. Also, I provided the source data reprojection to minimize errors between different map layers.
Chief Specialist on the Remote Sensing Data Analysis
since 04.2019 - Till the present day |JSC "TerraTech"
Python PostgreSQL QGIS C/C++ Git
- Engineering the remote sensing data for creating and sustaining the deep learning platform within “DigitalEarth” and “Pixel-AI” projects. - Making QGIS plugins and Python scripts to automate data refinery and image processing for deep learning and environmental monitoring. - Making thematic maps and 3D models for environmental management, natural hazards control, construction monitoring, and forestry for business and educational purposes. - Preprocessing Remote Sensing Data for deep learning and web mapping, including reprojection, filtering image defects, gamma correction, etc. - Supervising a team of 2-3 junior specialists working on GIS apps and scripts development (mostly QGIS plugins in Python).
Counselor
09.2016 - 07.2018 |Russian Geographical Society
.
- Supervising an expert group within the Russian Geographical Society grant program. - I edited textbooks and atlases on geography together with a multidisciplinary group of geographers. Over 1.3 million of their copies were published in Russia till summer 2018. - I received a gratitude "For the great personal contribution to the implementation of events and projects of the Russian Geographical Society in 2017".
Cartographer (GIS Analyst)
04.2014 - 11.2014 |Retail Intelligence Location Solutions

GIS Specialist
01.2014 - 01.2018 |Researching on the landscape pattern dynamics in lacustrine thermokarst areas
.
I worked as a part of a research team investigating thermokarst lakes patterns and dynamics in the Arctic. I was responsible for geostatistical estimates and presenting the results for the publication. In the process, I confirmed from the pattern analysis in the different regions that the lakes growth accelerates when their area reaches 1 ha. The research results were reported on the 2nd Asian Conference on Permafrost (ACOP 2017), and in the number of science publications.

.
It’s a long-term monitoring project in Arkhangelsk region, Russia. My job was to monitor the water pollution, find opportunities to diminish it, and look for potential threats for the environment, like underground water pollution. I used space and UAV imagery to find out the polluted areas, ground penetrating radar to find underground streams and cavities, as well as geochemical tests, to reveal the full picture of the environmental impact. Also, I took part in expeditions every year to collect the data and verify the space image interpretation results in the field.
